Can I Sync My Dad's iPhone to Update iOS4

my dad has 3.0 on his 3g right now. I want to update to 4.0. He has not really backed up in a while. I want to sync it to my computer (he hasn't synced with mine before) and update to 4.0. Can I do this without deleting his contacts etc?

You should reconsider upgrading a 3G to 4.0. Various reports on this forum are that it is really slow.
