Can i turn the macbook to sleep FROM the external monitor

Can i press the power button on the external display off so that the macbook goes to sleep when i turn the display off....?

I don't think you can do this. You could always just choose 'Sleep' from the Apple menu.

You can do that with an Apple Cinema Display.
