I have my hands on a brand new iphone 4.
it is 4.3.3. I understand that this firmware can be unlocked, but there's something about basebands being old and new??

Can someone answer my question who has sufficient knowledge on this situation?

thanks

you can only unlock using a SIM adapter (Gevey SIM) there is no software unlock for 4.3.3

are there any retail stores that sell gevey sim or can I only buy it offline?

National stores? Not in the US and I'm not sure where you are located.

Try mom and pop cell phone stores that sell unlocked phones, craigslist, or ebay

sure thing. turbo sim unlocks the white iphone as well, correct?

what is the difference b/t the regular version and the pro version?

I believe the pro one means that you don't have to call emergency services to initiate the unlock.

I think they're coming out with another one soon that keeps your phone unlocked even if you reboot?

OS firmware (4.3.3 for example) is what we jailbreak, modem firmware (4.10.01 for example) is what we unlock for all those (like the OP) who don't understand the terminology and processes involved.

For those who have the money and are in the US, why not just purchase a factory unlocked phone direct from Apple so you won't have to dick around with all this unlocking/Gevey nonsense (especially when you are purchasing a brand new iphone 4 that can't be unlocked anyway through jailbreaking means)?

Apple doesn't sale factory unlock iPhones in USA. They are all lock to ATT or Verizon.

Return your phone. Buy an unlocked phone. It's full price.
Otherwise, you're stuck using gevey. It looks like apple will be closing that exploit in the next update.

iPad? I'm talking about iPhone - Confuzzled.

Yes, I understand that you're using an iPhone. Currently, the only way to unlock an iPhone 3G or 3Gs that is above 5.13.04 is to use a program called Redsn0w to install the baseband from the iPad onto your iPhone due to the baseband's unlock-a-bility. Forget that it's from a different device.

@OP: Sell your brand spankin new iPhone 4 and buy a factory unlocked model. No more headaches. :)

No.
The only difference between the Pro and non-Pro, is that you do not need to trim the corner of your SIM chip when using the Pro.
