Can I update my 3GS? It's Oooooold...

Hi guys..

My 3GS is running 3.1.3 iOS, for like a year, maybe more, I don't remember when it was done.

Since then I got massively screwed by AT&T with a $700 phone bill after they changed my "plan" in the dark of night and didn't tell me. Anyway, I told them to go get f***d and that was the end of AT&T, FOREVER....

I went down and bought a T-Mobile throw away phone and put it's sim in my 3GS and it worked (and still works) just fine. I bought a 1000 minutes for $100 that doesn't expire for a year.

Now I just carry it with me when I leave the house just in case of emergency, I no longer use a cell phone to talk to people. I got Vonage for my home and it works fine.

But, I don't have internet on the T-Mobile and I can't figure out how to make it work even though the T-mobile website says that you can use an iPhone on their internet. I followed their instructions and no worky..

Well anyway, now I guess I need to upgrade to iOS 4 point something or maybe 5 point something. I don't know if the iOS 5 will work well though on my old phone, I remember the 3G was a nightmare when the iOS 4 came out and actually ruined a lot of 3G phones beyond repair. I don't want that to happen to my phone, I can NOT afford a new phone nor can I afford $1,300 a year for an iPhone contract.

So, can I upgrade my 3GS? And if so, what would be my best bet of iOS to use?

I could use some guidance here because I really don't know what I'm doing.

I do have a brand new, never used AT&T sim they sent me in the mail. It can't be used though because I terminated my AT&T service early this year. But I guess I could use the sim during the hacking ???

I have a screen shot of what the phone is currently running.

Oh, and I almost forgot, it IS jailbroken and unlocked. And the upgrade also needs to be jailbroken and unlocked as well for use on T-Mobile.

U can use Internet with them but u need to have a data plan and it sounds like u only have a voice plan.

Launch Cydia and see what SHSH blobs u have saved. U can only upgrade to whatever apple is signing or which blobs u have saved.

in addition, please make sure when you upgrade, build customs firmware so you can preserve the baseband. Otherwise, you will loose the unlock if you phone is update to the higher baseband.

I do not think you will be able to jailbreak until one comes out for IOS 5. Could you keep IOS 3 for a little longer?

Yes, Jailbreak for IOS5 is available. However, it is tethered jailbreak only.

Or the OP might have the old bootrom 3GS so he might be able to JB untethered and install ultrasnow to unlock by using a custom ipsw in order to preserve his baseband.
Run idetector.exe to check if you have the old or new bootrom.

I don't know how to find blobs in Cydia. Nor do I understand what blobs are

I read some time back that one should run this app from time to time. So I have a few times though I have no idea what to do with the information.

I was under the impression that it would save something to help me do future upgrades. Seriously, I do not understand this, I have no idea what shsh files are or blobs either. I am not a programmer or a hacker. A long time ago I ran an app that unlocked my iPhone, all I had to do was click a few things and it was done for me by some person far, far smarter than I am.

AJ--unless I'm reading the list from TU wrong, she has blobs for a number of 4.x.x firmware versions saved locally. (Though never uploaded to Cydia.) Doesn't that mean she could go custom with Pwnage to say, 4.2.1 or 4.3.3 and untethered? (preserving baseband for the unlock, of course--or does the new bootrom mean iPad baseband is required to unlock even if there are blobs?)

Or am I missing something? I'm still way better with iPhone 4 stuff than I am 3GS.

Yep, if she has 4.3.3 I would also suggest going with that.
I didnt bother reading that huge block of text and wasnt sure if all those listed were for her iphone but if it is its a better idea for now to go to custom 4.3.3

No, You are not SOL, you have blobs for all firmwares. So, you can restore to any of that firmware shows on Cydia.

Ok, so you guys say I am not SOL. I am relieved to hear this.

Now the question is, what would you recommend that my next step be?

I ran an app that says that my iPhone has the new bootrom. I don't know what that means to me.

I am far behind the times, you guys are way up into the 4.x iOS a long time ago and now even into the 5.x stuff.

I'm afraid to try the 5.x and have my phone hosed beyond repair. I'm afraid if I put the 5.x on it then I can never remove it and go back to an older version.

So it's my thinking that I am better off to stay with the 4.x stuff, at least for now. Right? Does this sound reasonable?

So, if I want to go up to the 4.x stuff, what should I do?

I have a T-mobile sim in it now. It works on T-mobile as a cell phone but no data. The 1000 minutes I bought says I can use it for data too but I assume they intend for it to be used with one of the phones they sell and not a hacked iPhone.

So data, I'm less concerned about, but cell phone service, that's a must. I paid for it so I need that. I absolutely refuse to ever, ever go back to AT&T.

I have an AT&T sim that was never used. Actually I have two of them. Someone told me I would need one to "activate" the phone on iTunes.

So I need to have it unlocked for T-mobile and jailbroken for Cydia and stuff so I can customize it. I purchased $$ some apps through Cydia and I want to continue using them.

I do not have a Mac. I have a Windows 7 64bit pc. So I can't use Mac apps to hack the phone.

I would be very grateful if you guys could point me down the path because I'm not a super geek, I'm just an average person that can follow simple directions.

Dee, just use snowbreeze to bump you up to 4.3.3. I never used it, so can't help u much there. There's tons of tuts on youtube on that.

Yes, once its done restoring it will ask you if you want to setup as new or restore from backup.
