I've heard of people buying a new Mac and then a new model comes out like the week or so after, and they are able to return it any buy the new one. Will this be possible. I just ordered a build to order imac with custom options, and if there should be a new imac release within the next month, will I qualify to return my existing imac and get the new one. I know there's a certain time frame that you must fall in to qualify.

If you bought it directly from Apple and new models are introduced within 14 days of your purchase then yes, otherwise no. Personally I do not anticipate new models within 14 days.

Even if the model I have is a build to order? I can return it at apple.

14 days from when you received it, even bto orders. Print out return label, put it on the box, bring box to post office and ask for receipt with tracking number.

Looks like you're in luck. If your order hasn't shipped yet, call Apple and change the order. Otherwise talk to them about returning it and getting the just announced iMacs.

Made me smile, and no, I wouldn't have expected a new model to be announced either :)

As others have said, ring Apple and ask, they are a very customer centric company, so good chance.
