I have a iPhone 3GS with a broken charging port that is still under applecare for another 6 months.

If I take it in to the Genius bar now, will they exchange it for an iPhone 4, or should I wait a while?

No.
Why not ask them for an iphone 5?:D
They will only replace it with the same model, color and same storage.
Company policy is not to upgrade you. Doesnt matter how long you wait.
They will have replacements in stock.

They won't exchange it for a 4... no matter how long you wait.

Apple only recently (the last 6 months or so) finally ran out of parts for the original iPhone. Considering the 3GS was available for sale just last week, they *might* upgrade you in 3 or so years.

I would wait maybe a month. It depends on how bad it is. I know people were saying they won't ever upgrade but I did have an ibook3 that had nothing but problems and finally after some key component went out and I had to get it fixed yet again I asked them if I could just have a new one. They said yes and since that was the ibook 3 and was no longer made I received a new ibook4.

So it can happen but the majority of time it won't. It just depends on availability.

You're comparing ibooks to iphones:D
They still have iphone 3G models for replacement and out of warranty swaps.

If they would do that, people would be finding ways to "break" their 3G's left and right.

And then selling them for good money. Or not bothering with upgrades.

Not gonna happen.
