Right now i have 10.4.11 on my almost 4 year old macbook. Can I buy the $29 Snow leopard disk and upgrade. Do i need to do a clean install. I am kinda noob in all this so kindly suggest if this can or cannot be done.

Apple will tell you that you can't. Numerous (probably 100s) of theads on here will tell you that you can. You can. You don't have to do a clean install. Go for it.

So should I just nuy the disk and then put it in the dvd drive and it will be a fairly easy install. I am worried that I might do something wrong and erase everything. i dont want to loose my pics, documents, music
etc

Regardless of OS upgrades you should have a full backup of those. Hard drives are nothing like 100% reliable. It could fail at any time.
