Hey guys, I've got a bit of a problem with my 3gs and i was wondering if i could upgrade... anyways here are the details.

-purchased phone 8/25 when i upgraded my at&t plan
-discovered lots of dust under screen-10/10
-apple store genius appointment -tomorrow, 10/13

I have had a similar problem with an old ipod touch. They looked at it and went back and gave me a refurb one.

Assuming that they would be willing to give me a refurb/new 3gs tomorrow, could I possibly upgrade to Iphone 4?

Its been less than 2 months and I was definitely not expecting this to happen.

If they are willing to give me a (new to me phone), could i pay the difference for an iphone 4?

If so, what price would i pay? Full? At&t upgrade plan price? somewhere in between?

Had this happened later i would know that i would have to pay full, but its been less than 2 months... I havent even gotten my 2nd month at&t bill yet lol

I need some more details...
I don't understand what you mean by 8/25. Is that 8/25/09 or 8/25/2010? If you got iPhone 3GS on 8/25/2010, then you decided to go with 3GS instead of iphone 4. You obviously didn't care about the latest technology. You just wanted to have an iPhone...

No, apple Genius bar will give you refurb 3GS at best. They will not give you iPhone 4. Why should they...

Will they let you upgrade? No. It's up to AT&T, not Apple at all because AT&T pays for your subsidy. You can get iPhone 4 at full price, but AT&T won't give you discount. You only had your phone for 2 months. No way. If you really want to have iPhone 4. Your best bet is sell your 3GS and buy iPhone 4 at full price.

I got the 3GS in 2010. I skipped the 4 because of all the stuff I was hearing about reception issues.

Also I was not suggesting that they would give me a 4 in place of a 3GS. I was just hoping I could upgrade to the 4 if they were to replace my phone anyways.

You just need to use the correct phrases because it is very easy for any of us to misunderstand. If you say upgrade, then people will just think it as you are trying to get early upgrade.

Its not going to happen if you updated to a 3GS less than 2 months ago and no they wont give you an i4 in place of your 3GS. They will only replace it under warranty with an iphone 3GS.

Thanks for the responses, I did some research and checked out the iphone upgrade guide on here. Apparently, i am eligible for the $399 dollar upgrade.

So theoretically, i could go to the apple store, have them give me a new/refurbed 3gs, sell it and get the $399 upgrade into the 4?

Thanks!

Yes... I would get the iP4 first then have the 3GS replaced and sell as new.

You've have your phone for 2 months and your eligible for an upgrade? Not too bad. You should be able to recoup most of the cost.

BTW - the two reason most companies wont let you upgrade when they give a replacement are:
1) if you get a newer device you have less incentive to upgrade in the near future
2) some people would ask for a replacement simply as a means of upgrading.

I was surprised as well, but when i called the *NEW# number, the text came back as I am able to upgrade.

Yea, I understand why apple wouldn't want to let me upgrade instead of giving me an upgrade. I just thought that for the short time that I've had the phone, reason #1 wouldnt be so strong.

I'd say sure you can upgrade at any time. It just depends on how much you want to spend to do it...

Absolutely, i can't imagine Apple not wanting my money...

I'll see what happens tomorrow.

*rant start*

Starting to hate the apple store, as I'm visiting them for all the wrong reasons.

last week, just went there cause my Macbook Pro trackpad was broken. Now this, and my mbp is making some weird hard drive noises.

getting tired of this.

*rant over*

Yes, that would work.
You should still get some good money for a 3GS. Probably a little more if you sell it unlocked.

Hmm so what seems to be a fair selling price of an iPhone 3GS 8th nowadays? Not jailbroken or unlocked.

Just sold my year old 3gs 16g for $305. Swap it out, sell it as a "new" refurb (don't sell as new as it's not new) and then buy your i4. Check out e-bay for going price. Good luck.
