Can I use a late 2015 Retina iMac as an external monitor and HD for an M1 Mac mini?

You cannot. The only iMacs with Target Display Mode support are the 3rd and 4th gen iMacs roughly between the years 2009 (with the 27-inch only at the beginning, later expanding the feature to the 21.5-inch when Thunderbolt was added) to 2014, excluding the 5K iMac released in late 2014.

There are some apps that will do this though, I was looking for an update for AirDisplay for my kiddo yesterday and saw a couple of choices in the App Store.

Yeah, there are certain softwares that allow you to do it but expect latency. Not going to be a solution for gamers or anything, but if you just need some data on the other screen it'd work. No way to do so via Thunderbolt.

One solution is to use Luna Display. It is a bit pricey at $80 but reports say it works pretty well. I've never personally used one.

Edit: Unfortunately, it doesn't currently use your iMac display as Retina. I'm not sure what that means exactly or how bad it looks. Retina in Mac-to-Mac mode

I’m using a Luna Display adapter with my M1 Mac mini and 2011 iMac.

As the iMac is non-retina, it’s working at native 2560x1440 resolution, which looks good to me - but I don’t have a 5K iMac to compare it to ;-)
