The hard drive on my MBP failed so I wanted to get the OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX30GXXX 2.5" 30GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive but I was told that OS X only works with certain hardware. Can I use this or won't it work with OS X?

It will work just fine. The rumor you have heard might be the fact that TRIM Support is only enabled for certain SSD controllers.. No worries, your OCZ-disk will work fine ;)

Does this mean that i can replace my normal HDD for a SSD one? I have a Macbook pro end 2008
