Can I use my entire internal partitioned for OS X and my External as Windows?

Can I format the external in two partitions. One for Windows, one for OS X file backup.

This is waht i want to do,

Internal -- OS X-60gb
External -- OS X - 30gb Windows XP - 50gb

So.... can I do this?

I've heard of people doing this but you need to burn a special drivers CD for Windows XP for it to work. And I've also heard it's slow as heck.
