I'm getting a new MBA in about one and a half weeks. I'd like to connect it to my late 2009 iMac 27'' using a mini-DisplayPort cable that I already bought.

My question is, can I use my iMac as a screen for my MBA and as an iMac at the same time? So, just like going from a full screen app to desktop, can I go from the MBA screen (on the iMac screen) to the iMac desktop on the iMac screen?

Thanks

You might also look at ScreenRecycler. It's essentially a VNC-type method to use another computer as a second monitor (so you could also use the portable as a monitor for the iMac). And while you're at it, try iTeleport. It will allow you to use the iMac's mouse/keyboard/clipboard on the portable if you are using both computers at the same time.

But is there a fast way to use both machines at the same time on one screen? If I have to switch using (⌘)-F2 you always have a lag, it's not really fast if you want to use both machines at the same time.

Is there a way I could use them like multiple desktops full screen?
