I have a late 2015 iMac with a very slow 1TB internal hard drive. I am planning on getting an external SSD as a boot drive and am wondering now whether I can just use the external drive as my ‘main’ drive (for boot and storage) and use the slower internal drive for Time Machine. Will this work?

It ought to work but if your iMac has a hardware failure that you don't want to get repaired you'll have to open it up and get the hard drive out should you want to retrieve anything from it or erase it.

So...if you don't want to open it now to swap the two drives are you going to want to open it up later to retrieve or protect your data?
