I am a graduate student. I have a MBP with FCP 7. The computers at school all have FCP 6. Can I ever work on a project on my laptop and then open it on FCP 6? I know I can do the reverse, working on Final Cut Pro 6 and then opening it in Final Cut Pro 7, but is there any way to save a program in Final Cut Pro 7 so that I can open it in FCP 6?

No, you cant. But you can export as an XML file and your edit decisions can be exported to most versions. But you will lose any transitions and effects so clean edits only.
