Can iMovie HD Import Camera Movies?

I've just started using iMovie HD, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me off the bat if it can directly import movies recorded with digital cameras? My Canon Powershot A70 records movies in AVI format, which iPhoto 5 imports fine, but how can I add them to an iMovie project?

I don't think that is possible because iMovie looks for camcorders. What you can do is import them in iPhoto and them drag them into iMovie. Thats what I do. The downside is that most video from still cams isn't that great of quality.
