Hi Everyone,

Another dumb question but I cannot remember since it's been so long since I did this. If you install Mac OS Tiger on an older Intel Mac (such as on older Intel Mac mini I have laying around) are you able to run classic on the Intel Mac or was Classic ONLY for PPC Macs running Tiger?

I feel like I should really know the answer to this but I just can't remember...

Thanks!!

:)

The best you can do on an Intel Mac is to run Mac OS 9 in emulation, using e.g. SheepShaver (limited to Mac OS 9.0.4) or QEMU (can run Mac OS 9.2.2).

Come to think of it, QEMU or SheepShaver would provide better performance for software like games than Classic ever could?

That's a good question. Given how "insanely" fast x86 hardware has become, I'd say that's quite likely.
However, the lack of graphics acceleration in the emulated system, unless you manage to successfully pass through a supported GPU to it using QEMU, may affect games or other software that relies on it.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the replies, that was what I thought I remembered about the Intel and Tiger.

As far as SheepShaver is concerned, is there a good "already configured" system anyone can recommend to download? I've setup a SheepShaver in the past from scratch but it was a pain in the butt and it would be so much nicer to just download an already pre-configured setup. There are some OS9 PPC games I would like to try and transfer from my PPC PowerBook G4 to my MacBook Pro to play under emulation if possible. They don't use accelerated graphics so they should run fine under SheepShaver.

Thanks again!

:)

That, I can't answer because I've never used SheepShaver but in the case of the OS 9 games, personally I'd check to see if they received OS X PPC updates (many of them did) and play them with Rosetta in Snow Leopard - if it's compatible with your MBP.
