Can iPhone 5 do this for the Blind?

Take a picture of homework which is a type written A4 Size. Can one take a picture, save it or convert to PDF and have iBook read it to you. a 12 year old child with visual impairment is in need of this to keep up with homework assignments in a regular sighted environment. I tried it and it does not work but if it was a word doc or so it works. Thanks

Can you scan it in OCR and save as a word document? That should work.
