Is there a way to get an iPhone / iPad to read from a thumb drive?

EDIT: Just read another thread. Needs to be jailbroken.

Some people are suggesting getting away from thumb drives and using other alternatives i.e. DropBox, email etc. That's fine for small files or docs but not for movies, photos or music you want to share. I gave a thumb drive of family movies and photos to a relative but she only has an iPad since she's away from home. No way to watch them. Sucks.

This is more than 16/32/64 GB of family movies? And she doesn't take a laptop with her? Regardless, no, you can't use a thumb drive to load content onto an iOS device, I would suggest loading the media before she leaves or use one of the more unappealing dropbox/email methods.
