Actually.. this is a serious question.

There's more research linking mobile phones to cancer all the time.

Fair enough - I'm not much of an alarmist myself, but I wouldn't mind protecting my brain a little.

The iPhone is ideally suited to use VoIP (over wifi) when it's available. And wifi transmissions are lower power - they have a range of a few hundred feet at best where my 3G signal can go many miles.

I'll check out TruPhone - but this is something that Apple could lead in by working closely with the Cell provider and integrating the voip switching smarts into the iPhone. There are phones that do this already (eg: BT in the UK), but it's not well known.

The UK system works by having a VoIP server which pretends to be a cell tower. So when in wifi range the phone connects to the VoIP server and then the network sees it "handover" between towers (from Cell to VoIP). That's totally seamless, and also allows the phone to switch back to cell on request (eg: user request, or out of wifi, or QoS degraded).

The other alternative, I suppose, is for Apple to run its own VoIP system.
1) for calls started on the cell, they'd stay on the cell network even when wifi becomes available
2) when people call our Apple number - it would try VoIP, then transfer to the cell number if unavailable.
3) when on wifi and we make a call - it would use VoIP, and if leaving wifi the Apple VoIP servers would have to put the call on hold and quickly call the iPhone back using Cell, then reconnect the call.
.... It's much more convoluted.

Anyway - would love to see Apple helping me protect my brain. Anything reducing our exposure to cell radiation - and the good will of such a feature would be amazing for Apple.

What do you think?

ps. Of course, encouraging people to use their handsfree would also help :)
