Can it drive external monitors?

This still isn't clear to me. The HDMI adapter sold by Apple seems to be limited to 1080p, even though HDMI isn't fundamentally (I'm driving a 3880x1440 monitor through it right now). I'm entertaining getting the machine as a toy for weekend days, since it's not really useful for work, but it would be nice to every once in a while bring it to the office and connect it to the monitor.
