Can MacBook Pro use an iMac monitor?

I have an early 2010 MacBook Pro and I would like to use my 2007 iMac as an external monitor. Is that even possible?

Only with AirDisplay or ScreenRecycler.

Not directly via cable, but there are 3rd party software like screen recycler over a network.

Ok so I recently purchased a 13" MBP, and hooked up my old iMac via Screen Recycler. I hooked it up via firewire, but am experiencing quite a bit of lag. I am using JollysFastVNC on the iMac.

Should I use ethernet rather than FireWire for this?

Also, the JollysFastVNC website says "Lion users: If you are connecting to a Lion machine, make sure to use Mac Authentication (option-connect). Lion has a bug with normal VNC authentication." I cannot figure out how to use Mac Authentication in the preferences. Does anyone have guidance on how to do this?
