Can mail.app work more like iphone mail?

ok so on my ipad and iphone I had gmail, yahoo and hotmail all working fine. However on my mac yahoo and hotmail don't seem to work with mail.app unless I pay extra only my gmail works. If I am doing this wrong can someone help me out or if there is a differant software to use what would that be?

You would need POP access to download email to your Mail.app. It seems Yahoo offers this only through a paid premium service.

If that doesn't work, you may be able to fiddle around with Exchange if you have the new Mail.app in Snow Leopard.

I installed Thunderbird, it seems to have taken care of it for me
