I have a mid-2009 MBP 13'' with one RAM slot not working, so currently it's running on 2GB RAM. I was thinking if it was 16 GB compatible, to put in one stick of 8 GB RAM, but I guess it supports only up to 8GB so that I should replace the 2GB with a 4GB stick instead?

Yep, I have this model, and I'm reasonably sure it can't detect more than 4gb in each slot so 8gb total.
