I have a few DVDs which have been created in 4:3, so the 16:9 image is annoyingly squished!

Is there any way of viewing the DVD is its proper ratio?

You need to set the resolution of your monitor to something close to 16:9. The best I could come up with on the fly was either 2560x1600 or 1920x1080. My 23 in Samsung will go to 1920x1080. Go to the Monitor Control Panel in System Preferences.

Must've been created without the appropriate 16:9 flag set.

Use VLC to play the discs; it can do aspect ratio correction, and will play DVDs straight from the optical drive.
