I just bought the new remote to use with my last gen appletv. I have a tv, and a receiver along with the appletv that was previously setup by someone else to work with a harmony remote. So far the new appletv remote turns on and off the tv and controls the volume of the tv though it does not shut off the denon receiver or control its volume. Can the appletv remote control the receiver also?

thanks!

I have ATV 4K, Denon X4400H, and Sony X950H. They are all set to respond to CEC.
When I paired the Remote everything just worked.

When you do a long press on the Apple TV remote it basically tells the Apple TV to go to sleep and no longer output an HDMI signal. The receiver and the TV respond to this by turning off and when you wake up the Apple TV from sleep by hitting the power button again the TV and receiver both turn on.

The mute button and volume buttons also work. I am not exactly sure how the pairing figures out what equipment you have but I have both directly connected TVs and well as one with the receiver and it all works.

I have a avr-x3400h and now I can’t get the receiver to play audio through the speakers at all so I’m guessing it is some setting that got changed though I have no idea what. I put the receiver on the input for the appletv but nothing plays. Just audio from the tv.

Is your TV configured to play from external speakers.

Yes. I paid some installer to set everything up around 2 yrs ago. Previously I was able to play sound just from the tv or if I turned the receiver on it would play audio from ceiling speakers. Now I can’t get audio from the speakers and strangely the receiver will not turn off. I press the power button and it only changes the display from main zone on or main zone off.

I think the new remote only has the ability to work with one other device. My Sony XBR-49-X800H has HTML-CEC capability, so it can operate other equipment via those protocols when properly set up. I set my new ATV 4K remote to work the power and volume on my TV, and then the TV uses its HTML-CEC connections to my Sony soundbase to control it. As a result, all I have to do is press the Power button on my ATV remote and it turns on my TV, which then turns on my soundbase and sets the ATV 4K as the device to use. When I change volume on my ATV remote, or mute it, the TV automatically adjust the volume on my soundbase. Pretty cool, and simple to setup if your devices are compatible with HTML-CEC. But it did require HTML-CEC. An older TV might not be able to do that.

The key to using HTML-CEC is to control everything with your TV. Then the TV can do all the work. If you set up you sound system to control the sound without the TV, then it will be problematic. My older TV didn’t have HTML-CEC capability, so I had to use the soundbase to send signals to every device, and that was a PITA. HTML-CEC greatly simplifies setting up an entertainment system.

Good point! The new ATV remote only controls power and volume on your other device (TV).
