Can no longer import to imovie from digital camcorder

My imovie suddenly just stopped recognizing my digital camcorder when plugged in. It worked great at first then about 8 months ago it stopped. I tried to do a repair permission but didn't correct the problem. Sometimes when I plug it in I get a message saying I unplugged it wrong.
