I have a Mac Mini M1. Before installing Sequoia, I did not have to put in a password to wake the screen. Nor did I need a password when restarting the mac. I have tried to restore my no-password access by going to Lock Screen in Settings. However the option entitled "Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off" is grayed out. The setting is by default set to "Immediately." How do I ungray this option so I can change it to "Never."

Thank you Phototristan. That worked.
I opened up the iPhone mirroring app. Then opened the App's settings. I changed the setting to "Ask Every Time." It had been on Automatic.

Then I went to the Lock Screen setting. Now "Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off" was not grayed out. I change it from "Immediately" to "Never." That did the trick. I no longer need to put in a password to end screen saver mode.

It's tied to the new iPhone mirroring. Looks like you have to disable iPhone Mirroring from automatically authenticating first. How to do that? I'm not sure.
Thank you. Iphone Mirroring setting was the problem.

Thanks for posting the steps. I feel like most won't really need to be mirroring their iPhone that much so doing the above settings makes sense.

Hi
I have followed the steps but the option "Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off" is STILL grayed out.

Need help please.

I have selected the option "Automatically Airplay" to "Never"... And still my macbook can mirror my iphone.

Plus I am facing the problem mentioned in above comment too.

there are 2 more apps that can cause this, Apple Watch login app and Filevault.

as for apple mirroring, I liked it, but I much rather not have to log in. So I went and did a reset settings for it.
you can try manually login it, if that works for you good.

in my case it was also file vault

go to spotlight search> file vault > open it
it’s just one option you have to turn it off

then go to user group
automtically log in as (choose your main account)

if all 3 apps are ”not activated”
You should be able to use that option

lastly just to check pulse

go to login password > password must say “a login password has not been set for this user”
if not go to “set”
login on the old password (you can copy paste)
leave the other options clear that is new password, verify and hint.
click on change
it will tell you anyone will be able to log in and other stuff, just continue until it lets you

and the last thing you do in “Login password” is to set the toggle to
automatically log in after re start

thank you apple …

Thanks a lot. I tried what you said but it didn't work.

I made all the changes you said, didn't work. I reversed all the changes back where they were before AND then I just have restarted my Mac twice and luckily everything is back to normal. That option is not grayed out anymore. How it happened, I don't know.

Thank you phototristan and icapricorn. The change to the phone mirroring did the trick. Was getting quite frustrated at not being able how to get the setting to not be grayed out. Never occurred to me it could be linked to the phone mirroring.

many thanks!

I just happened to stumble upon this thread, and I don't have iPhone Mirroring set up, but this sounds baffling. It seems that Apple is trying to handle the case where... *takes deep breath*... someone breaks into my house, sits down at my iMac, opens the iPhone Mirroring app, and logs into my iPhone, with the phone on the same network, i.e. while I'm at home.

Have I got that right? Or is there a concession for desktop Macs?

Speaking of which, is there a way to require password ONLY on reboot and deliberate log out? No password on wake from sleep or screen timeout

Thx

Sounds about right.

Just because a potential security hole is "Unlikely," doesn't mean it's not a hole ;)

Whoever figured this out - thanks.

Entering my password to mirror my iPhone is fine. Having to do it every time I wake my computer from sleep - which I do several times a day - aw hell to the naw.
