Can not get a dvd with a region to play on my new macbook pro

I recently purchased a 15" macbook pro and when i tried to play one of my dvds, all the programs i tried freezes up and stops working. It will play one of my burned region free dvds without a problem though. How do i fix this or is there another player i should try. I've already tried the VLC player and it did the same thing the other players are doing
