Hi all,

My mom is still very interested in getting a new touchscreen phone, in particular, the new iPhone. Her only issue now is that because she gets her nails done she has a hard time using the current iPhone. I know there had been a few patents released over the last few months showing that Apple is looking into the issue, but does anyone think that the new iPhone screen will support this?

Please provide your thoughts.

Thank you!

If she's having trouble with the current phone, the odds are high that she'll have the same type of problem with the iPhone 4

i reckon she will have problems using the tip of the finger, but if you use the flat side or the side of the finger but that is awkward.

You could use a stylus but that might be inconvenient.

Or ask her to shorten her nails? (not trolling here) Long nails are bound to give problems...

I don't think styluses work? I know someone with long nails and it isn't a problem for them .. how long are we talking? lol

I guess some may find it harder than others…

I guess she'll have to decide whats more important, long nails, or a touchscreen phone. Furthermore, how do people type with long nails? They're so gross!

The new iPhone isn't going to have any different keyboard than models past.
I use the side of my pinkie finger and it works quite well. :D

Myself and two of my girlfriends get our nails done frequently (all have iphones)...and I didn't find much issue with mine interfering with my iphone.

Edit: the tips we normally get are considered "sport length" and only come a little past the tip of the finger...not sure as to the length of your mom's nails.

I had more issues with getting my contacts in and out. (and I've had them for 11 years) :p

I used to have very long acrylics, I ended up getting rid of them as it ruined my bejeweled score :) (I learnt how to take my contacts out with them lol)
Apple won't change their capacitive screens, it's why the phone is so easy to use compared to resistive touch screens.

"Sport Length"? What kind of sport?:D

I have a feeling that touch-screens will be the death of really-long nails.

Not yet, of course, but by 2020 touch screens will be EVERYWHERE so anyone getting nails that interferes with using a touch-screen won't be able to do much in the world.

In short, don't get phones with capacitive touch screen, which is what iPhones use. If she wants to type with her nails, then the solution is phones with resistive touch screen, or those with hardware keyboard.

Not really. Resistive touch screens will be just fine, plus there are still phones that have physical keyboard. Also, there's the sausage stylus. ;)

Isn't proving you've no need to be a productive member of society the whole point of the nails? :D I mean, they already basically can't type with them, and that doesn't seem to have stopped them....

GOOD!
And I see that already happening. Everyone I know has taken their fake nails off and gone short and polished.
Long nails are so witchy Poo IMHO

I hear ya', but right now it's just typing. Soon they won't be able to buy groceries, pump gas, get movie theater tickets...

The list will keep growing and growing.

You're right, the class of woman who never has to do these things herself won't have to change. I'm just saying, you'll be seeing a LOT less of them. They'll be a sign of extreme wealth...a sign that you don't have to do ANYTHING for yourself!

Cougar prowl!

Actually, any part of skin will work.

Yeah. How do these people type or use computers?
