Got one used 2.5" sata SSD from SanDisk, 480GB capacity, connect it through external usb adaptor, the system detects it, shows uninitialized, so, try to initialize it, but it only shows 16KB available, and unable to perform iniitalization operation. Does it mean this SSD is dead, or it can be easily fixed? Any comments? Thanks.

Maybe try wiping the first few sectors. Dismount the disk in Disk Utility and then run "diskutil list" to get its ID (e.g. disk3, but be sure to double-check).

Then run "sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdisk3 bs=1m" (note the r in rdisk3) and let it run for a few seconds, then press Ctrl-C to abort.

If you're at all hesitant about this then don't do it; writing zeros to the wrong disk will be a disaster.

What do you mean by "used"? Is this one that you have already been using for storage?
Or, did you purchase a "refurb" directly from SanDisk -- or did you buy from a local store ??

If the SSD won't erase/initialize to make a new volume on the 480GB drive (and stubbornly holds on to all of 16KB), then I would guess that you bought a failed SSD.
Can you return it?
But, yes, it's easy to "fix", by replacing a likely-failed SSD.
Be sure to try a different USB adapter/enclosure

I would not try to buy a used SSD,when you can buy a new SanDisk 480GB SSD for less than $40.

Didn’t purchase it, just found it from my garbage box which was in my garage for quite a while.

Will try that and see if any result, will keep you posted. Thanks.

"garbage box"?
Maybe there was a good reason for it to be in the trash/recycle...
Or, do you have another meaning here?
