I bought a Time Capsule this week. On the first day, I didnt want to disrupt the network since someone else in the house was using it for work, so I only used the TC for an initial Time Machine backup. The next day, I set up the wireless network. I had a little trouble, but a call to my ISP resolved it, and the wireless net now is up and running, serving this Mac and three PCs.
However, from the point the network was established, I lost the ability to do backups or access the original backup. The TC shows up in Finder, but when I click on it, I get the message, Connection failed. Time Machine wont work, either to run new backups or to give me access to the one that already was completed.
When I did that first backup, I gave the TC a name. When I set up the network, I decided that was the name I wanted for the network, and so I changed the name of the device itself. When this problem in accessing the TC arose, I thought that name change might be the problem, and so I went into the AirPort utility and reverted to the original name for the TC, so that now the device itself and the network have the same name.
I have checked various forums but have found no consensus on what to do about this. One person in a forum said he talked to Apple support on the phone for two hours and the final fix was to do a full wipe of the Macs hard drive and reinstall Leopard. Obviously, I would prefer not to do this since my Mac isnt backing up (although I could borrow another external hard drive if thats the only solution available).
I very much would like this problem resolved. I spent a lot of money for a 1TB Time Capsule, and right now Im only able to use it to provide Wi-Fi something I already had with a Linksys device.
Oh, I also can't print wirelessly, but I'm less concerned about that.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.
