HomePod Can someone at home intercom or msg to an iPhone that’s away?

I am trying to setup a few homepods for my parents. One has an iPhone ones doesn’t, they would like to intercom to the iPhone from the homepods when the person is in the yard, cellar, or even away. I remember seeing something like this, but I can seem to find anything on it.

Yes. There’s even a setting for it in the Home app.
