Explain it to me like I'm 5 (ELI5):

I do not understand the implementation of "Repair State" at all. Let me see if I got this right:
  • Must go to find a device in Find My
  • Tap on the Remove Device link
  • It then will error out with "Cannot remove device"?
  • It will then offer to put the device into a Repair State?
What is the point of all this? Why not - you know... create a link called "Prepare for repair" (or similar) and not go through this weird "try to remove, fail to remove and then offer repair state"? I find no Apple KB article on this yet...

I don't get it either, but I think the reason is partly contained in this:

"Removing ‌Find My‌ also has a hitch with Stolen Device Protection, as there is an hour wait when turning off ‌Find My‌, which can be inconvenient for repair purposes.

The new repair state leaves ‌Find My‌ turned on, so Activation Lock remains enabled, and the ‌iPhone‌ continues to be trackable with the ‌Find My‌ app while it is being repaired. "

a) they can fix it right away and b) you can track it during that time 🍸😸
