Can someone explain this memory usage to me please...

I have a 2.4 MBP with 2gig of ram installed.


So this is what my memory widget shows.

What do the catagories mean:

Wired

Active

Inactive

Used

Free

Swap

Where is the swap memory...is it ram or hard disk memory - 2 gig seems a lot!

The orange bar seems to jump up when I open files in Illustrator, and can make the machine crawl along.

Swap means information is copied from the RAM to the HDD to make space for new information to be loaded into the RAM. It's also called paging (Page In / Page Out).
