Can someone explain what data APN means

It means access point name and it shouldn't remain blank. Username and password don't necessarily have to be filled out (at least, I've never had to, with any provider). Usually, your phone should pick up the settings automatically, or by SMS. If not, check the FAQ on your provider's website to see what's what.

my phone came with all 3 fields set to blank (sprint)

my g/f's phone just says "phone" in the first field (ATT)

what is that bad thing about keeping in blank?
