Hi,

I'm coming from an iphone 15 pro to the 17 pro and am a bit confused by the upgrades with charging speed. Looking at the specs I don't quite get it, with all the new buzz about qi 2.2 etc.
Is the new device charging faster than my old (be it wired or wireless?) and if so, what accessories do I need? :)

The iPhone 17 Pro can charge at 40W max.

MagSafe & Qi 2.2 can charge at 25W max when paired with a 30W charger.

Strangely, Apple only offers a 30W max charger as an accessory. 🤷🏼

I recommend purchasing a charger with a capacity greater than 40W.
Ugreen offers an excellent quality charger (65W) for €30.

Well- thank you- and could you please explain to an average person how that would translate to any gains over my 15pro?

According to Apple:

- 15 Pro: 27W maximum and approximately 30 minutes to reach 50%

- 17 Pro: 40W maximum and approximately 20 minutes to reach 50%

Note, however, that you won't receive 40W during the entire charge.
Power may decrease to around 50-70% to prevent the battery from overheating.

Ok thanks- and what about wireless?

Wireless charging is limited to 25W on both models.

Wireless charging won't be faster with the iPhone 17.

Incorrect. This is the only thing currently out that will reach full fast charging speeds, it is from Apple. Others will likely come out soon.

Hey that doesn’t seem to be right- I went again and checked on Apple.com and it says my 15pro can wirelessly charge at 15w whereas the 17pro can charge at 25w.
I guess my old MagSafe chargers need to be replaced in order for that to work?

Compared to the 15 Pro, you’re right, it’s faster. The iPhone 16 could do 25W MagSafe so compared to that the iPhone 17 isn’t any faster (for wireless charging).

You do need a “new” MagSafe charger that supports 25W, the original ones sold won’t support it. There’s been 3 generations of MagSafe pucks from Apple, and the 3rd gen came out this week and also supports Qi 2.2.

The iPhone specs page advertises 50% in 20 min if the charger is >40W. The footnotes identities a specific charger being used, but Apple always does that with charging specs, and I do not believe that means a specific charger is required.

Also Apple advertises 50% in 20 in the EU too, but Apple is not selling the 40W-with-dynamic-60W adapter in the EU.

Yeah I think he was just responding to the person who was saying that Apple doesn’t sell a >30W charger.

Apple's new brick is the only thing currently out that supports the new specification for its fast charging. But I am sure many options will be out soon according to this article.

"In short, you’ll need to buy Apple’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter if you want to charge your iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max as quickly as possible, at least for now. This is because Apple’s charging brick is seemingly the only option on the market that supports this new USB-PD 3.2 SPR AVS specification."

Ah interesting, I didn't know about the new PD protocol.

where is that quote from? There is nothing on apple’s website that suggests that’s true.

Thanks for correcting me. I couldn't find this new charger, model A3351.

Unfortunately, it's not yet available in Europe.

Wait what? You need a specific charger to get that wired speed? And they don't sell that one in the EU? Can't believe that this is true.

Is qi2 25w different from what apple is using here? For example this: https://de.ugreen.com/products/magflow-2-in-1-magnetisches-kabelloses-ladegerat-25w-magsafe

Ugreen is stating 0-50% in 30 mins instead of 20 mins. I saw a lot of vendors coming out with qi 25w chargers now- and thought this is the new standard that Apple is following here- or do they AGAIN have a proprietary or just even NEWER standard?

The quote is from the 9to5mac article I posted.
The claim that you can charge to 50% in 20 mins is repeated on the EU website, where the Apple charging block is NOT available for sale. Seems like 9to5mac has taken some, uh, liberties with their interpretation imho.

I guess we'll be able to sort this out soon enough though. I'll kinda be sad to have to return all the Anker stuff I just picked up, but if we do need PD-3.2, I guess I'll need to wait a bit longer for that to show up.

9to5mac got the info from this post on X:
There is a photo with evidence, unfortunately.
