iOS Can someone point a newbie in the right direction

I know nothing about ipad programming. I know HTML, vb, c, c++, java, cocoa, and am familiar with unix gcc style program building, visual c++ style IDEs. I would like to pickup programming again since its been years and make app with client side networking abilities to communicate with x10 modules, and create a real time status of my house. Which lights are on, and stream security cameras through the 3G connection. Sorta like a weather bug for my house. Where do i begin?

you might want to see if anyone over at Hack a Day has done this. I know there a similar projects that have been done and uploaded. If you can find somebody that's already done it and get the source code, could save you a lot of time.
