Can spirit be used on my 3.1.2 3GS blackra1n jb iPhone

I have a 3GS new boot rom 3.1.2 that is jailbroken with blackra1n and I want the untethered spirit jb. Can I just run that or do I need to restore to the default OS and start clean?

You can upgrade through itunes to 4.0.1 and then go to the web site
http://jailbreakme.com from safari on your iphone after upgrade. From the home page slide the button and it does the JB right on your phone. No link necessary.

Its done right on the phone no pc necessary for the JB. It exploits a hole in the safari browser on the phone.
