Can´t update, repair disk or install new programs... Help!

System: Mac Pro OS X 10.5.6

Recently I have encountered the following three problems

1) Software Update: Stuck at checking for new software and never updates.
2) Repair Disk Permissions: Never ends... seems to be in endless loop
3) Can´t install new software: stops at choose Volume to install on ... get the message "examining additional Volumes".

Any Ideas ???

Boot your system with the Install disc (grey ones that came with computer). Run Disk Utility from that and see what you get. I suspect your HD is going.

ok... well I booted my macpro up with second disk and had no problem repairing permissions and disk seemed ok... but that still didnt solve problem when i booted back on the original disk...
