can the 15 inch MBP use 16gb memory or 8 only?

What year Macbook Pro do you have?

2011 models can use 16 GB, the ones from before that can only use 8 GB.

Apple doesn't officially sell you 16gb but the machine is able to run 16gb fine. There are no hardware limitations for that.

Its cheaper anyway.

Because that's all they offer. You can get 16 GB (two 8 GB sticks) from places such as www.macsales.com
