Can the Apple Watch Camera App work on wifi?

Was wondering if the camera app can work on wifi when it is out of bluetooth range. Anybody know?

I tried to test it myself and did get a picture with my iPhone in another room and then the app disconnected so not sure if it just had a faint bluetooth connection or it was indeed wifi. Tried to find it in the Apple literature but could not find any reference.

I think it's mostly a matter of getting your Watch to connect to WiFI vs. BT
