Can the HDD Cameras only work on the Intel Macs?

I recently got a JVC Everio HDD camcorder but I have been unable to access the video I have shot.
I have an iBook, I bought it right before the switch to Intel, and I am wondering if this is the reason I can't connect my camera?
I bought iLife 08 and of course the only application that couldn't be installed was iMovie.
Is there a way around this or do I have to buy a Macbook?
My computer only recognizes the camera as a hard drive it seems.
I would like to figure this out soon, is there anyone out there that can help me!?

you can't directly import video from HDD cameras into iMovie. you'll have to convert it to DV in MPEGstreamclip.
