Can the iPhone 3G be transferred after activation?

I'm currently on a family plan, and my wife has the original iPhone. I'm interested in the iPhone 3G, but the wife isn't planning on upgrading. My phone is not currently eligible for upgrade.

Anyone know if it would be possible to buy the 3G iPhone as an upgrade to my wife's phone, transfer it to my number, and then put her number back on the original iPhone?

I stopped into an AT&T store today and they said that wasn't possible, but I don't see why that would be. I can't imagine they would prevent transfer of an iPhone 3G after purchase - what if one were to be sold used?

I am wondering the same exact thing. My wife doesn't have an iphone already, but she is eligible for an upgrade, and willing to use up her upgrade to get the phone for $199, but then let me have the phone. Will this work?!
