I am thinking of using the iPhone 3GS as more like a media player or like a portable game unit and using the net via WiFi at home. Is that possible? I thought that if they remove the SIM card then the device becomes useless then? or can I still update it and I am not going to use the Phone features or internet outside.. since I have the 3GS. Actually why is I thought can give it to my small kid to use during those car rides..... advise? Thanks

It'll work fine without a sim - just not as a phone! And obviously it'll be dependant on wifi for various data functions, just like an iPod touch.

Thanks. I am thinking of getting a temp phone like the Galaxy GS2 or something while waiting for the iPhone 5...
