Hi,

Can the iPhone be charged via USB, as in plugging it into a computer's USB port and it charging that way. My current Samsung can, and I'm wondering if the iPhone can do it as well, as I'm upgrading sometime.

Thanks!

Yup. Not a problem. Although it will be somewhat slower than a direct plug in depending on your computers voltage output.

Cool, thanks. I get power-cuts frequently where I live, so I keep an old iBook G3 charged up so when there's a power cut I can charge my phone :)

This. I learned this the hard way with my last smartphone's USB car charger which only had a 500mA output. If the battery was completely dead, the phone couldn't draw enough power to even boot up before dying again.

Sooo I just bought a 2.1 amp USB cigarette lighter adapter for car charging.

Well, my iBook seems to produce enough power to charge my current phone. Do you reckon an iPhone would use much more power than a Samsung S5603 phone:

No, even a 1000mA charger would be enough to charge the iPhone. It's just a question of charging as fast as possible, which is why I got the 2 amp charger.

I usually charge my phone overnight, which should be plenty of time to get the iPhone from empty to full, right?

i don't know. charging rate seems to be the same whether it's usb, iPhone or iPad charger. it's relatively quick IMHO.
