i am getting an ipod 3rd gen from a friend. no i dont mean ipod nano 3rd gen, i mean the model with the buttons under the screen, not on the click wheel. i have to replace the battery, so i was wondering if there was a way to get a color lcd into it

No? What good would it do? You can't look at photos, play video, or see your album artwork.

Because of this, the UI isn't written in color, so you would still have a monochrome interface.

Beyond all of that, the color screens had a higher pixel count, so the UI wouldn't display correctly, either.

what if i installed ipod linux on it? would that make any difference?

if you wrote new firmware for it.

well the specs on the released version of ipod linux for my ipod say it supports video. so im guessing it will be the new firmware for it, and it should support color and vid.

I would think you might have a better chance at getting the rockbox guys to help you with this? After all these guys have reversed engineered rockbox on some of the devices.
