Hi, for those who have been using the Mac Studio M2 Max 2023 in a non-Apple, multi-display setup, can it remember display settings (e.g. no content swapping among displays, no automatic switching between extended screen mode and mirror mode, no automatic changing of resolutions, etc.) after reboot and wake from sleep?

I've got an M1 Studio with a pair of Studio Displays and I've never seen any of the issues you describe. I can't imagine the M2 Studio would be any different.

This isn’t a computer issue. It is an OS issue. Messing with the Spaces settings and some other OS settings can relieve it some. There are third party apps you can use to remember window sizing and placement too.

I think I read that Studio Displays have no such issue. Some people said that Apple does not want to fix it because they want us to buy their Studio Display. What so special about the Studio Display that this problem does not occur.

That is why I am asking non-Apple display setup.

Which third party apps?

Moom, Display Maid and Stay.

Thanks. Which one can solve all the following issues when using multiple non-Apple displays?

After reboot/wake from sleep:

1. Content swapping among displays
2. Automatic switching between extended screen mode and mirror mode
3. Automatic changing of resolutions

Apologies, I missed the 'non apple' part of your first post.

Stay works quite well for #1 in my experience.

The rest will depend on the displays in question. Using USB-C -> DP vs HDMI port directly might matter.

External displays are just a ******** on Macs if using non-Apple options so really there is no other way but to try with what you have and see if you can get it working to your liking.

I think they all just do #1. You can try the 10-day trial of Switchresx. To see if it helps with #2 and #3.

I've been using Stay with my M1 Max and although it is effective with most display restoration it isn't 100%. I still have trouble with Adobe apps, a few third party apps and the iTunes window - which is very consistent. I think that after all the testing, reading and thinking about it this is an OS failure that has never been looked at in depth. Having read other responses, there are systems out there that may or may not have not been subject to it but I doubt it will never be rectified. I even have doubts about OS 14...

I thought mine was acting up (I have 3 monitors). But once I arranged them in every combination of monitors being on/off it's been working fine. I have one 4K Benq 27inch and 2 identical 1080p Dells 24inch. Now I can turn on any combination and the arrangement doesn't break.
