I forgot my MBA at the office so I can't test this for myself. I have a few USB wall chargers that worked on my iPad 2 but show "not charging" on the iPad 3. I know my iPad 2 would charge when plugged into my MBA (albiet slowly) has anyone tried USB charging with the "2012" iPad?

USB ports on my 17" MBP will not charge the new iPad. I'll give it another try later. Maybe it had something to do with just being set up

Interesting. I'll definitely have to try it soon and if not, maybe throw in a iPhone charger in my laptop bag.

Pretty much any USB port will charge any iPad as long as the screen is off. It won't be a fast charge by any means, but it will charge. When the screen is on it will say Not Charging, which is the case, as the screen uses up all the power. Once screen goes off the trickle charge will start.

My 2009 17” MBP will charge it, but it's incredibly slow and if you use the iPad while it's charging it will pretty much stay at the same percentage. I left it plugged into my MBP for about 4-hours and it charged maybe 10%.

Well it works on my 2010 MBA. I did not get the "not charging" message. I'm sure it's painfully slow but it does work, at least for me.

Yes - my Macbook air and Macbook pro both charge my iPad (4G) in theory - though if the iPad is on while I'm charging it, it actually discharges quicker than the USB port can charge it!

I'm doing it right now:

My 3rd generation ("new") iPad is charging via my 2012 Macbook Air's USB3 port. The iPad is powered on and the screen is on, and it's still charging (not just maintaining current charge). Not sure about the rate of charge, but it's definitely working.

Looks like the 2012 MBA charges the "new" iPad at a rate of about 1% every 10 minutes or so, with the screen on. That's pretty sloooooow... but at least it's not draining, and it is charging.

My first gen MacBook pro won't charge my iPad 2. I get the "not charging" message. No biggy.
