Can the new Macbook Pro 16" play this video without lag?

The peru video - I am curious if the new MBP 16" can play it at 8k @ 60fps HDR?

You may need to install chrome to see the option for 8k:

On a PC/Win10 with ~1650 graphics card it uses ~80% of the GPU but CPU stays close to 0%.

This 8K video is smooth as glass.

Bud, did 'ya miss this post? Desktop 9900K has a high base speed with a high core boost clock. 32 GB of RAM, NVME SSD and one of the best video cards on the market short of the 2080 Ti. If his system struggles with that one video but doesn't with another 8K video, then it's the video itself.

That's weird. My i7-7890k and 1080Ti play the 8K version in the OP perfectly.

Ok, something doesn't make sense. I'm trying the same video on my Ryzen 3500 / Readeon 5700 XT machine and it stutters even worse playing in Chrome. CPU/GPU utilization is 4-7% though... Any idea why?

I know this isn't Macbook but this video plays fine on my Dell XPS 9560 and it supposedly has lower performance than the 16" (though has a 4K screen).

Maybe try a different browser? I'm using Edge Beta.

Make sure in YouTube on Chrome you select the 8K version.

There is something wrong with that particular video/browser combination. I just watched a bunch of 8K videos on the MacBook Pro and on the Ryzen desktop. Playing 8K NASA video I was able to download. Smooth and fans don't even kick up. It's a 3:09 minute video at over 3GB, so it's definitely 8K. GPU fans are idle and this is playing on a 4K monitor... GPU utilization around 10%

Tried using Chrome and it stuttered. Better on Edge, still not perfect.

On PC with Nvidia graphics, there is an option to run Chrome with the dedicated GPU, where as Chrome usually uses the Intel one. This makes things much smoother.

Are you allowed to use the dGPU on the Mac to run specific apps? Or it does it automatically

It won't be able to play it since Apple does not support Google's VP9 codec. This is nether a hardware not software issue, it's a political issue. They want google to use HEVC.

They don't want to use Google's VP9 standard. It's "open" in that it's published and licensing fee free, but it's not consensus-based in that only Google had a say into how it was written.

Interesting. Are you using Chrome? Pretty sure it is not a function of CPU since my CPU is barely running. Less than 9% utilization. Seems to stall. I get the spinning circle as it pauses. But it is not getting the data, network is barely used.

Can Firefox do 8K? What did you set the videos resolution to? In Firefox the max I can select is 4K. Only in Chrome does the red 8K (4320p60) option appear. Also full screen the video.

Yes of course it can, Firefox support VP9 codec, please see attached screenshot. 8K (7680x4320@60) 0 frames dropped!!

No way I can playback this with my 2015 MBP 13" haha
