can time machine backup both external ssd and internal hdd

Hi all. First time poster, but long time lurker here. I am about to add an external ssd to my 2011 imac. The 256 gb lacie thunderbolt ssd. I would like to know if time machine will backup both ssd and the internal hdd, or if it will only backup one or the other. I plan on having the os and all apps on the ssd and leaving data such as movies, music, downloads, documents, etc. on the internal.

What do you recommend in the situation for backing up?

Unless you exclude it, the external SSD will also be backed up while the internal HDD gets backed up.
